TSUM VALLEY TREK

Tsum Valley, the hidden paradise and exotic corner of the Himalayas, is located in the northern part of Gorkha District near the Tibetan border. The valley is surrounded by the majestic Buddha Himal, with Himchuli (Himal Chuli) to the west, the southern Himalayan ranges, and Sringi Himal to the north.

The Tsum Valley Trek is one of Nepal’s most remarkable journeys, where trekkers can experience the warmth and hospitality of the Tsumbas, the living Tibetan Buddhist culture, and untouched wildlife preserved due to Buddhist traditions that discourage hunting.

The word “Tsum” is derived from the Tibetan word “Tsombo,” meaning vivid or vivid vision. Historically, Tsum Valley was a culturally distinct region known as “Tsum Tso Chucksums,” meaning thirteen provinces ruled as a single territory.

The valley is decorated with stone-built settlements, terraced cultivated fields, crystal-clear streams, dense forests, and views of towering snow-covered peaks rising above 7,000 meters.

The people of Tsum are known as Tsumbas. Their traditional trade connections are mainly with the Kyirong region of Tibet, accessed through high passes at the head of the Shar Khola (East River) Valley.

Piren Phu (Milarepa’s Cave)

Piren Phu, also known as Pigeon Cave, is one of the most sacred sites in Tsum Valley. It is located at the base of a rugged cliff near Burji Village at an altitude of around 3,300 meters.

The famous Tibetan saint Milarepa is believed to have meditated in this cave during his spiritual journey. Milarepa, also known as Mila Dorje Senge, was born in 1052 AD. His original family name was Thopaga, and he is widely known by this name, meaning “delightful to hear.”

The cave complex includes three separate gompas attached to the rocky cliff, housing life-size statues of Milarepa, his footprints, and images of Avalokiteshvara, Buddha, and Tara.
